Presbystasis (Presbyvestibulopathy)
摘要
Presbystasis refers to age-related vestibular dysfunction that affects gaze stability, postural control and spatial orientation due to age-related changes in the vestibular system. The vestibular system performs perceptual functions through numerous reflex mechanisms and includes the peripheral apparatus, vestibular nerve, brainstem, and central nervous system. A comprehensive evaluation of elderly patients presenting with dizziness should always be performed to identify possible underlying pathologies. In elderly patients with presbystasis, it is often difficult to obtain a complete, meaningful, and definitive diagnosis to guide management. Diagnosis is made by careful assessment of symptoms and is usually supported by vestibular and audiologic examination. Treatment options include vestibular rehabilitation, balance exercises, and modification of daily living habits. Early diagnosis and appropriate rehabilitation not only reduce the symptoms of presbycusis but also reduce the risk of falls and improve overall quality of life.
