Vestibular Paroxysmia

Vestibular paroxysmia (VP) is characterized by brief episodes of vertigo lasting from a few seconds to a few minutes. These attacks may be accompanied by tinnitus, hypoacusis, or hyperacusis. The term VP was used by Brant and Dietrich in 1994 and the first diagnostic criteria were proposed. In 2008, the diagnostic criteria were modified to “definite VP” and “probable VP.” With the establishment of diagnostic criteria and advances in treatment options, the diagnosis and management of VP have improved significantly. Although neurovascular contact is commonly observed in patients with VP, it may also be present in healthy individuals. Therefore, further research is needed to elucidate the specific factors that contribute to the development of symptoms in patients with VP.
