Infected Distal Tibial Non-union Treated with Hexapod Fixator

Fracture related infections after open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) of long bones poses a significant challenge to orthopedic surgeons and their patients. Soft tissue infection and osteomyelitis can hinder the bone from healing and lead to non-union (Struijs et al., J Orthop Trauma. 21(7):507–11, 2007). The internal hardware can serve as a nidus of infection and its removal is often necessary. Yet, achieving stability of the fracture is required to treat both the infection and to achieve bony union (Hoit et al., OTA Int Open Access J Orthop Trauma. 3(1):e055, 2020). The following case is presented to illustrate the treatment of a fracture related infection of a tibial shaft with a hexapod fixator (Taylor Spatial Frame).
