Compression Distraction at Malaligned Nonunion Using PRECICE

Treatment of distal femur fractures remains challenging. Malalignment and nonunion are commonly reported complications following treatment failure. In this clinical case, a patient presented with a shortened, valgus malaligned nonunion following treatment of a supracondylar distal femur fracture with a lateral locked plate. The patient was treated with a medial distal femoral closing wedge osteotomy at the nonunion site and placement of a retrograde magnetic intramedullary nail. Following a short period of compression, the magnetic nail was then utilized to lengthen the limb to restore length. Successful distraction osteogenesis was completed to restore length to the patient’s limb. Following healing, an antegrade reconstruction style medullary femoral nail was placed to protect the regenerate prior to primary total knee arthroplasty.
