Reconstruction of Transulnar Amputation with Osseointegration Prosthesis and Myoelectric Robotic Hand

This chapter discusses a successful case of a traumatic transulnar amputation who was reconstructed with an osseointegration prosthesis. Following surgery, a myoelectric prosthetic equipped with CoApt© pattern recognition software was attached directly to the implant. The short ulnar osseointegration implant was able to support the load of the prosthetic including a multiarticulating robotic hand. The patient underwent training with pattern recognition software to learn to control the myoelectric hand and wrist motions. Prosthetic control gradually improved to allow activities of daily living. This case highlights what is possible with interdisciplinary coordination between surgeons, prosthetists, and emerging technologies.
