Press-Fit Osseointegration for the Transhumeral Amputee

This case illustrates the management of a patient with a traumatic transhumeral amputation which occurred 4 years prior. He had tried and failed a body-powered prosthetic arm and subsequently had targeted muscle reinnervation to use a myoelectric prosthesis, but the socket overlapped the myoelectric sensors and the perceived weight was burdensome. He sought osseointegration to allow the myoelectric sensor array better access without socket obstruction and to reduce the perceived weight of a myoelectric arm. The osseointegration anchorage helped this patient make better use of other available technology.
