Below Knee Amputation Reconstruction with Osseointegration Prosthesis for Chronic Pain and Deformity

A 39-year-old female sustained an open right ankle fracture in her early 20’s leading to many surgeries due to infection and nonunion. She presented with chronic pain, a nerve stimulator, a tibiocalcaneal fusion with valgus deformity, a nonplantigrade foot due to first ray dorsiflexion, and a 3-cm limb length discrepancy. Rather than undergo multiple lengthy reconstructive procedures to achieve acceptable limb function, she elected instead for below knee amputation and reconstruction with an osseointegration prosthesis and targeted muscle reinnervation. This led to pain free ambulation within months of a single surgery.
