Simultaneous Transfemoral Amputation and Press-Fit Osseointegration for the Patient with Severe Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

Complex regional pain syndrome type 1 (CRPS1) can be debilitating. Some patients continue to have such severe and persistent pain that they desire amputation for relief, which can resolve the pain when performed at the appropriate level. Traditionally, socket prostheses are used for rehabilitation, but such prostheses are associated with dermatologic symptoms, poor fit, mobility dissatisfaction, and amputees often report a low quality of life. Amputees consistently report that osseointegration provides better mobility and quality of life than socket prostheses. Amputation with simultaneous osseointegration is a suitable procedure for patients with CRPS1 that remains resistant to conservative management, providing pain relief (because of the amputation) with better mobility and quality of life (osseointegrated versus socket prosthesis).
