Osseointegration Amputation Reconstruction Extremely Short Femur

This case presents a 34-year-old female who fractured her femur in a motor vehicle crash. The injury resulted in a right above knee amputation and left the patient with an extremely short residual femur that a socket prosthesis could not easily accommodate. To reconstruct the limb, an osseointegration implant was utilized along with a thigh lift, sciatic neuroma excision, and targeted muscular innervation. Given the short length for osseointegration, the patient’s postoperative weight-bearing protocol was modified to be slower than a typical regimen, but still included gradual loading to stimulate complete integration of the implant. The patient ultimately returned to unassisted ambulation with no complications.
