Principles of Rodding Upper Limb Deformity in Children with Osteogenesis Imperfecta

Management of lower limb deformities in children with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) has improved their mobility and increased the requirement to use mobility aids. Upper limb deformities in these cases can become a limiting factor in functional activities of daily living and affect mobility. It is not just an aesthetic concern anymore. Moderate deformities affect mobility, and severe deformities affect the ability of self-care. The humerus is more often affected than the radius and ulna. The goals of correcting upper limb deformities are primarily to reduce the frequency of fractures and to improve the alignment and hence improve function and mobility.
