This article presents an in-depth analysis of the integration of dry urbanism principles in Qatar’s urban development, offering a comprehensive perspective on sustainable urban planning in arid regions. Dry urbanism, crucial for addressing the challenges of water scarcity and climate responsiveness, forms the core of Qatar’s strategy to combat its harsh climatic conditions and rapid urbanization. The article begins with an overview of Qatar’s geographic and climatic context, tracing the historical development patterns that have shaped its urban landscape. It then delves into the specifics of Qatar’s development strategies, including the Qatar National Development Framework (QNDF), Climate Change Strategy (CCS) for Urban Planning, Qatar Urban Design Compendium (QUDC), and various other key policies and plans. These strategies are closely examined to highlight their alignment with essential aspects of dry urbanism, such as water management, energy-efficient urban design, and resilient infrastructure development. Through concrete case studies, the article showcases the practical realization of these principles in Qatar, evaluating their impact and effectiveness. It also discusses the challenges and opportunities inherent in implementing such strategies, positioning Qatar as a potential model for other arid regions facing similar challenges.
