Treatment of Water Hyacinth Juice in an Upflow Anaerobic Digester: Process Stability and Quality of Digestate’s Macronutrients

Environmental and economic damage to closed water bodies caused by the overgrowth of water hyacinths has become a global problem. This study aimed to recover biogas from juice obtained from water hyacinths (water hyacinth juice: WHJ) in an upflow anaerobic digester. Furthermore, the leftover digestate quality in terms of macronutrients was investigated. The anaerobic digestion process stabilized within the first 40 days, and the average methane yield and total organic carbon removal were 332 ± 77 mL g-volatile solid (VS)−1 and 80.0% ± 6.5%, respectively. The WHJ-derived dissolved total nitrogen (DTN), phosphate (PO43−), and magnesium (Mg2+) decreased sharply upon passing through the digester, thereby indicating the formation of crystals, such as magnesium ammonium phosphate hexahydrates. The macronutrient concentrations in the digestate (DTN, 60 mg-N L−1; PO43−,136 mg-P L−1; potassium, 2807 mg L−1; calcium, 26 mg L−1; Mg2+, 120 mg L−1; and sodium, 379 mg L−1) were comparable to or higher than those in the Bold Basal and C media, which are typically used for freshwater microalgae cultivation.
