Antimicrobials are some of the most commonly prescribed medications in intensive care units (ICU) around the world; however, their misuse and overuse have led to the emergence of multi-drug resistant bacteria posing a significant public health threat. Pharmacists are well positioned to take prominent roles in antimicrobial management due to the understanding of and influence over antimicrobials and their use in the ICU, including promoting optimal antimicrobial use, aiding in the reduction of infection transmission, and educating other healthcare providers and patients.
