Alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) occurs due to decrease alcohol intake and is a complication of alcohol use disorder (AUD). This disorder is not uncommon in the critically ill and the occurrence of AWS results in patient morbidity and mortality. Challenges in the management of AWS include the ability to determine risk for AWS and its associated severity, its diagnosis given multifactorial confounding aspects, and the management of these patients. This chapter aims to summarize current literature on these aforementioned aspects and identifies research gaps that exist and the role of the pharmacist in the management of AWS in the critically ill.
