Managing abdominal surgery patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) involves a variety of unique challenges and benefits from a multidisciplinary approach. Critical care physicians, surgeons, advanced practitioners, nurses, nutritionists, and pharmacists are just some of the many team players who must work collaboratively to provide the best comprehensive care. A basic understanding of the complexities of abdominal surgery patients provides a foundation to best care for this group of patients. In this chapter, we will describe some of the surgical procedures that you may encounter while caring for these patients and how that can influence their treatment in the ICU. Specifically, we will discuss the open abdomen, ileostomies, colostomies, enterocutaneous fistulas, NSTIs, tracheostomies, and gastrostomy feeding tubes.
