Genetic-Based Energy Efficient Clustering and Multihop Routing Approach for WSNs

Over recent years, there has been a significant amount of research conducted on distributed wireless sensor networks because of its intervention in many military and civilian applications. Since sensors are inherently resources constrained with limited energy supply and communication distance, effective network management is essential to extending the system's lifespan. This can be achieved by dividing the communication tasks between nodes and designating high energy nodes for the most energy consuming tasks. Data aggregation and data transmission are the two activities that consume most of the network energy. Besides, sensors cannot sustain long-distance transmission. Therefore, in this paper, a Genetic-based approach is introduced which aims to select some nodes for data aggregation and others for data transmission through multihop communication. According to the simulation results, the suggested intelligent hierarchical method of clustering and routing is more energy-efficient compared to a few current clustering protocols, Additionally, results show how the proposed approach can reduce energy consumption and therefore increase the system's lifespan.
