Energy Consumption Analysis of a WSN for Terrestrial Mammal Species Monitoring

This study analyzes the energy consumption of a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) designed for monitoring terrestrial mammal spe-cies. A Markov chain is developed to model different states of the system, including data collection and transmission by active nodes. The analysis considers variables such as the number of active nodes, energy available in the network, and energy consumption in different operational states. The results show that both the total energy capacity and the number of active nodes are critical factors influencing the system’s lifespan. Additionally, opportunities are identified to optimize energy consumption through proper management of the nodes’ sleep and activity states. These findings provide a solid foundation for designing more sustainable and energetically effective monitoring systems.
