Voice-Based User Interface Development for Android Mobile Applications

User interfaces in which people use their own voice, as a mode of interaction to enter data into an application, are increasing in popularity. This trend is mainly due to the emergence of commercial voice assistants, such as Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant. Despite their popularity, these assistants are not available to many people, at least not as many as smartphone users. The computational challenge in the development of this type of user interfaces involves, on the one hand, recognizing a voice commands and, on the other hand, processing them correctly to offer a satisfactory response. In this article, we propose a user interface commanded by voice to navigate the Web, using natural language to reduce the digital divide associated with the skills required by this activity. A web browsing prototype is developed as an application for Android devices, which has been tested with end users. The results of these tests show that the participants consider that the prototype has an acceptable level of usability.
