The ageing of the population is a global demographic event that has been unfolding for several years, with higher repercussions in areas facing demographic challenges such as depopulation. This new demographic, social and economic situation forces us to analyse the new reality from the perspective of older people and their role in society. Active ageing, as well as the increase in life expectancy and the improvement health, means that this role is becoming less passive and more relevant to the functioning of society. Considering the new context and always from a gender perspective, we set out to analyse the situation of active older people in Extremadura through R&D&I regional project named “Active Ageing Scenarios in Extremadura: proposals for intervention” co-financed by Counselling of Economy, Science and Digital Agenda (Junta de Extremadura) and European. Regional Development Fund. Two different methods were used to analyse the social participation of older people and, more specifically, volunteering. On the one hand, a total of 1401 surveys were carried out and, on the other, focus groups were held. In both cases, the aim was to ensure that the region's elderly population was representative. As a result of the analyses, we propose a series of proposals to improve the social participation of older people and senior volunteers in Extremadura and thus improve the active ageing of older people living in the region.
