Behçet’s Disease (BD) was first described by Hulusi Behçet in 1937 as a trisymptom complex characterized by recurrent aphthous ulceration in the mouth and genital area and hypopyon iridocyclitis. Eponyms refer to a name created after a person and are commonly used to designate medical conditions. In line with most diseases that are named after someone, various scientists have previously documented some clinical characteristics of Behçet’s disease. The origins of clinical descriptions for Behçet’s disease can be traced back to Hippocrates. Undoubtedly, the authors who meticulously documented many clinical signs and manifestations of the disease have made important contributions to the definition of the disease. However, describing a clinical picture is not the same as perceiving it as a distinct disease. Hulusi Behçet attempted to explain the symptoms observed throughout history by grouping them together and attributing them to a single disease. Hulusi Behçet’s distinguishing feature, unlike other authors, is this. This chapter will begin with a brief introduction to Hulusi Behçet, followed by an overview of the efforts he made to define Behçet’s disease and gain recognition for it in the medical community. Additionally, we discuss the disease’s historical chronology and the conflicts surrounding its nomenclature, considering both historical evidence and scientific findings.

摘要
