Life Extension for Transformers

This chapter will provide first an introduction to the transformer lifetime determination and definitions for end of life and life extension. The main steps of a life extension project will also be explained. The chapter will then give an overview of existing methods for life extension of aged or failing transformers including interventions such as maintenance, refurbishment, repair, upgrade, relocation, and monitoring. There is a special focus on activities going beyond normal maintenance or repair. This chapter concludes with two case studies of transformer rebuilds—one at the factory and the other at the installation site.
