Conclusion, Advocating for the Dyad

The final chapter of this book brings to a close my examination of applied drama and person-centred nursing as interwoven approaches. I make suggestions throughout this chapter by highlighting the elements of the study I have found most resonant, whilst pointing at areas to develop and reconsider for the young field of drama and nursing. Equally, I propose statements on the nature and practice of interdisciplinary work, opening this chapter with an argument for generosity to be a core thread in how to approach cross-disciplinary research and practice. I also take time to reflect on my personal experience of undertaking this project, and how I have navigated and traced paths through often unknown terrain. I share personal experiences of injury and care, giving an insight into approaches to research like performative auto-ethnography that have fortified my journey as a researcher and practitioner—and have certainly contributed to the vibrancy of this project. After this, I present a summary and main contributions and implications of this book. Drama and nursing as a field is exciting, diverse, and mostly under the radar. This book hopes to provide a footing for others to follow and to grow the field. This chapter specifically advocates for seeing this work as ‘dyadic’, an approach consisting of the mutual and generous exchange between two disciplines for the common purpose of making us better people. This chapter is my attempt to provide insights into how applied drama enhances person-centred nursing education. It is also my offering to the field of drama and nursing, in the hope that it may grow and influence more educators and practitioners to share the life-saving skills that drama can cultivate alongside nurses across the globe.
