Overcoming Vulnerability

  • Karl Tizzard-Kleister

摘要

This chapter continues presenting the findings of my study alongside a discussion of wider contexts, practices, and concepts. The evidence presented in this chapter elucidates the second theme of my study; ‘overcoming vulnerability’. The concept of vulnerability is explored in Part 1, Chap. 4 . However, Chap. 6 is where these concepts are put into relief against the findings from my primary research. How participants understand vulnerability is questioned in nuanced and complex reflections, contributing new and exciting ideas of how person-centred nursing and applied drama can work together to develop brave and attuned practitioners. By providing a psychologically safe space through applied drama methodologies, participants expressed comfort and willingness to recognise their vulnerabilities and how these affect their approach to person-centred nursing. I am excited to present evidence that drama participation and creativity cultivate confidence as well as a learned ability and proclivity for being vulnerable, understanding risks and when to take them, and being comfortable in uncomfortable scenarios. At its root, this chapter explores how drama participation encourages nursing students to develop skills and confidence in navigating new and challenging scenarios in general, not just specific situations. As this chapter explores, recognising and reframing perceptions of one’s vulnerability is at the core of developing these skills.
