The Weberian Sociology of Leadership

The chapter investigates Max Weber’s seminal contributions to the sociology of leadership, with a focus on his theories of charisma and rationalisation. Weber’s work is situated in the broader context of the sociology of power, considering how his ideas, particularly on charismatic authority, have influenced contemporary understandings of democratic leadership. The discussion extends to other classical theorists who have built upon or diverged from Weber’s ideas, including Carl Schmitt and Joseph Schumpeter. The chapter explores the concept of plebiscitary democracy and the transformation of charisma in modern political contexts, while also offering insights into the role of the leader in contemporary democracies. Through a detailed analysis of Weberian sociology, a framework is provided for understanding the complex dynamics of leadership, authority and democracy in a rationalised world.
