The introduction will try to throw light on the significant role that place, space, topography, geography, territory etc. play in the twentieth century British poetry. A book dedicated to the study of Philip Larkin’s idea of place and space as it is evident in his works demands a more in-depth research on the unwavering position of spatial guideposts in modern British poetry. This introduction will try to go for a detailed discussion of how divergent responses to places may be found in the works of the poets who preceded him like T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, W. B. Yeats, W. H. Auden, Dylan Thomas, the poets who were his contemporaries like Seamus Heaney and Ted Hughes and some poets like Simon Armitage and Carol Ann Duffy who came to the literary scene towards the end of the twentieth century and are still being published.
