Disorders of Phonology in Aphasia

In this chapter, we will explore various aspects of phonological disorders in aphasia. We will examine the concept of phonological complexity and its implications for defining phonological intervention based on data from aphasia research. Our discussion will draw from interdisciplinary studies in aphasia, specifically in relation to generative phonology and the notion of phonological markedness. Additionally, we will showcase a treatment study that focuses on letter–sound correspondence training within a phonological complexity framework based on sonority principle and the format of syllabic clusters. Furthermore, we will touch upon bilingual aphasia and examine the phenomenon of phonological transfer between languages as a relevant factor in understanding phonological disorders.
