Liposarcomas (LPS) are soft tissue sarcomas (STS) arising from the adipocytic tissue. Epidemiologic data from large-scale registry studies have shown that liposarcomas constitute one of the most frequently diagnosed STS, comprising up to 11–13% of all soft tissue malignant tumors [1]. Along with gastrointestinal stromal sarcoma (GIST), leiomyosarcomas and undifferentiated sarcomas, the incidence of yearly LPS exceeds 10/106 [2, 3]. While the fourth edition of the World Health Organization Classification of Soft Tissue and Bone classified LPS into four separate pathologic categories, there are three clinically recognized subgroups based on distinct clinical and molecular features [4, 5]. The well-differentiated/de-differentiated (WD/DD) LPS comprise the most frequent subtype, followed by the myxoid/round cell (MRC) and pleomorphic (Pl) subtypes [6]. Liposarcomas often present as painless masses which most frequently arise from the extremities or retroperitoneum. Surgical excision remains the only curative modality in localized disease [7–9]. However, there exists extensive heterogeneity in pathologic subtypes and clinical presentation, which mandates a personalized approach in management [6, 10, 11].
