The death and devastation rocking the European countryside during World War I momentarily broadened and strengthened Brazil’s agriculture reform movement. While remaining a rescue mission for besieged rural elites, agricultural diversification became a national crusade for a truly wealthy Brazil. Prominent Brazilians convinced elite associates that conditions in Europe meant Brazil would be “swimming in gold” if only the state assisted production from its mines and fields.
