A metaverse provides an immersive and linked experience for individuals. Experiences will be enabled by VR headsets, gaming systems, desktop computers, smartphones, etc., while there will likely emerge several metaverses which in turn will need interconnection. A metaverse may be portrayed as a platform that utilizes networking to build an open ecosystem in which different platforms co-exist to serve all users. The emergence of a metaverse as a virtual environment encompassing augmented reality, virtual reality, and the Internet is reshaping the way we interact, communicate, and transact. As the infrastructure supporting a metaverse becomes increasingly critical, the choice of interdomain networking technologies becomes pivotal. This paper explores the advantages of Segment Routing IPv6 (SRv6) over other technologies, particularly Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), in building robust and scalable networks for a metaverse. By examining key features and requirements of a metaverse, we illustrate why SRv6 presents a superior choice for delivering immersive interdomain experiences and supporting diverse applications. We will show that MPLS will gradually be replaced by SRv6 on existing IP transport networks in order to support new metaverse application requirements.
