Introduction

Chapter 1 offers an overview of the themes and research projects covered in the book. While presenting the book’s central arguments, the chapter touches upon significant parts of the theoretical background and ties together the various chapters that draw on studies in different regions of the Global South. It discusses the need for re-understanding the right to participation and its implementation complexities, and it proposes epistemological alternatives to the homogenisation of childhood in order to address inequalities that prevent children and young people from having inclusive, non-discriminatory and sustainable spaces for participation.
