Cellulose-Based Packaging: An Emerging Sustainable Packaging Option for Future Use
摘要
Cellulose is becoming an exciting option for tomorrow's packaging applications because it is found in large quantities in the walls of plant cells and is abundant in natural resources as well. Different from the other packages that damage ecosystems, cellulose stands out because it comes from nature and decomposes easily. Additionally, cellulose greatly broadens popular use through its mechanical advantages such as rigidity, durability, and resistance to permeation. The land use and the carbon footprint necessary for traditional packaging can be decreased by producing cellulose-based materials from agricultural waste or by-products. Cellulose packaging products are biodegradable and compostable enabling them to merge smoothly with current recycling practices hence reducing disposal of renewable waste. The packaging industry is adapting methods for packaging materials so that they can be sustainable according to consumer preferences. The consumer demand is now more often for environmentally friendly packed items and that is why cellulose remains among the most preferable options because it is adaptable and sustainable.
