The chapter introduces the organisation of this book and lists a number of applications of fast matrix multiplication algorithms to current problems in science and engineering. Roughly speaking, they are as fast as the fast matrix multiplication algorithm used. We also sketched the history of matrices in general and presented a number of historical but still valuable classical monographs on the subject of matrices. At the end of the chapter we presented the classical definition of matrix multiplication together with the scientific paper where it first appeared.
