The region was divided into seven large geomorphological units and 28 soil associations. The geomorphological units represent different soil landscapes. Serir landscape with nine9 soil associations. The parent material of the soils consists mainly of alluvial sands, which are often covered by aeolian sandAeolian sand. MesozoicMesozoic rocks or Quarzitic stones appear sporadically as small outcrops. Groundwater occurs a few centimeters depth at Bir Tarfawi. Erg landscape with one soil association. The parent material of the soils of this landscape consists mainly of aeolian sandAeolian sand sheetsAeolian sand sheets and dunes. Between the dunes, there is sometimes alluvial sandAlluvial sand. Deflation plains with five soil associations. The parent material of the soil consists mainly of various sandstones, silt stones, quarzitic-sandstones, gneiss,Gneiss and graniteGranite. Hilly landscapes with six soil associations. These landscapes consist of inselbergsInselbergs of MesozoicMesozoic sandstones and silt stones as well as hills of basaltBasalt and quartzite sandstones. Limestone plateau and its escarpment with two soil associations. This landscape is located north of Dakhla-Kharga and east of Kharga-Baris. It consists of limestoneLimestone plateau, which is bordered by steep slopes. The slopes are cut by wadis filled with fluvial sand and gravel. The wadis end in deflated-depressions, leveled by playa-sediments and interrupted by inselbergsInselbergs of MesozoicMesozoic sandstones and silt stones. The playa sediments are partly covered with aeolian sandAeolian sand and with various dunes. Sandstone plateau and its escarpment with four soil associations. The parent material of the soils on the plateau consists of JurassicJurassic and Cretaceous sand as well as silt stones. Quaternary sandy and silty sediments are found in small shallow depressions and dry water channels. Quarzitic sandstones and basaltBasalt mounds are scattered on the plateau. Oases landscape with one soil association. This landscape consists of playa, fluvial, and aeolian sediments with sandy to clayey soils.
