The investigated region is found in Central East Sahara (SW Egypt) under the tropic of Cancer and belongs to so-called horse-latitude deserts. In addition, the great distance from the Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea makes the area the driest region on earth. This region has been little researched scientifically and has never been investigated by soil scientists. The results of our soil investigation served to refine the soil classification of the World Soil Map (FAO-UNESCO in Soil map of the world (1:5,000,000), vol I, Legend, UNESCO, Paris, 1974) for full and extreme deserts. In the FAO soil classification system of 1988 and the “World Reference Base” (ISSS, ISRIC, FAO in World reference base for soil resources. FAO, World Soul Resources Report, No. 84, Rome, 1998), basic results from our investigations have been used, in particular for the definition of the “yermic phase” or the “yermic-” and “aridic properties”.

摘要
