Given all sorts of global problems, climate change, biodiversity loss, pandemics, social insecurity and injustice, there is a fundamental question on the table: how do we, as humanity want to enter an uncertain future? There is a need for a fundamental transition towards regenerative cities. Transformation from a mechanical to organic worldview. Current state of cities: the cities in the global north, many of them are historic, old, and culturally saturated. The appetite, and the capability to discover new pathways for future living are limited. For cities in the global south, in general, this is different. On a long-term timescale, in recent decades, these urban agglomerations have grown fast. They are still maturing and eager to adapt to changing conditions, new challenges, and disturbances. This opens a new opportunity: to leapfrog the old-fashioned urban planning, instead develop a novel story of environmental and social inclusiveness and novel equilibria. This chapter introduces the contours of this new narrative for regenerative urban futures.
