Social Work Education in Myanmar: Challenges and New Pathways

Myanmar’s social landscape is rapidly changing, demanding a reevaluation of social work education. Limited training options and a disconnect between theory and practice hinder graduates’ ability to address the country’s complex social needs. This study, using interviews with diverse stakeholders, identifies the need for comprehensive reforms. A contextually relevant curriculum integrating human rights principles and emerging social issues is crucial. Expanding educational pathways through a tiered degree system, such as a BSW or MSW program, can address career limitations. Furthermore, fostering a robust social work research culture that bridges the theory-practice gap is vital. Finally, investing in faculty development and international collaboration will ensure educators’ skills to deliver an effective curriculum. These reforms will empower future social workers with the knowledge and expertise to tackle Myanmar’s social challenges and contribute to a more just society.
