This chapter posits that human design is an extension of biological evolution, influenced by societal categorisation and resistant to paradigm shifts. Despite awareness of environmental impacts, systemic reorientation in the construction market remains slow. This book highlights that marginalised forms of evolutionary design, often overlooked, are as prevalent as goal-oriented designs, advocating for a reinterpretation of architectural taxonomies through an ecological lens. The discussion draws parallels between architectural components and evolutionary traits, such as exaptation, where a feature evolves for one function but is repurposed for another. This concept, exemplified by the bird's wing or architectural elements like the arch, underscores the opportunistic nature of evolution. The chapter also explores the attributes of creative structures that enhance their potential for functional co-optation, emphasising redundancy, variability, and diversity. Furthermore, the book critiques the failure of contemporary architectural and urban design to address global crises, attributing this to the rigid categorisation within human civilisation. It suggests a revolutionary shift towards a non-deterministic approach to design, inspired by evolutionary biology. This shift advocates for a broader understanding of creativity, considering disorder, randomness, and informality as integral components. By embracing these principles, designers can create more resilient and innovative solutions, leveraging the latent creative potential of objects to adapt to changing environmental conditions. This holistic view integrates associative thinking and evolutionary adaptation, positioning creativity as a systemic, collective, and multigenerational endeavour, thereby reconnecting knowledge separated by disciplinary rigidity.
