The Study of Microclimate Changes in Oases and the Influence of Palm Trees on Enhancing Outdoor Thermal Comfort Case of Sidi Okba Oasis, Biskra, Algeria

The existence of plants is vital within oases ecosystems, providing a reliable source of water and food while also contributing to mitigating the environmental impact of the city. The effects of subtle climate changes within the oases are particularly evident in the quality of public spaces. This study is dedicated to explore the impact of palm trees on outdoor thermal comfort by establishing specific criteria for vegetation coverage on the street in the city of Sidi Okba, which is one of the oases in Biskra, and located in the southeastern region of Algeria, by approximately 400 km away from Algiers capital city. During the hot summer season, the focal point of this research was on two main parameters: First, on the type of vegetation, and second, on its density. The experiment was conducted on a hot summer day, during which local climate data was collected using the Testo 480 smart digital device. This device allowed the recording of the local climate parameters such as temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed, all of that were in every two hours during 48 h. Later, this local climate data was integrated into simulations using the ENVI-met atmosphere model. Various scenarios were explored to assess the impact of diverse vegetation cover, starting from comparing traditional trees to palm trees and their influence on outdoor thermal comfort. Passing by following the principles of sustainable development which encompass environmental protection. Also, greening the streets has the potential of enhancing the local climate of the oasis, protects its ecosystem, and creates an outdoor environment that encourages walking. In addition, it enhances social interactions and reduces dependency on automobiles. This shift can significantly have a positive impact on air quality and environmental protection by encouraging people to spend less time driving or using other means of transportation. The results of this research can guide future urban development and decisions about restoring strategies, as well as defining the action plans that target the enhancement of outdoor thermal comfort, particularly in oases streets.
