Comparative Post-occupancy Evaluation of LEED and Non-LEED Residential Buildings in Jordan

The rapid development of green buildings in the early twentieth century emerged in response to the demand for energy-saving and environmentally friendly building systems. This research focuses on Jordan, where the residential building sector accounts for 21% of the final energy consumption, with a continuous upward trend. The study aims to compare conventional houses and LEED-registered houses in terms of building performance and occupants’ satisfaction levels. Two conventional and green buildings (n = 4) were selected to conduct the study. A post-occupancy evaluation was conducted covering three dimensions: (i) Indoor environmental quality (i.e., indoor air temperature, relative humidity, and indoor CO2 levels) in the most frequently occupied rooms of the selected houses. (ii) Occupant satisfaction with the indoor environment parameters (e.g., indoor thermal conditions, air quality, lighting, and acoustics). (iii) Energy consumption costs and bills for both house types. Continuous physical measurements, qualitative interviews, and quantitative observations were conducted between May and July 2022 to collect the required data. Results indicate that LEED-registered houses outperform conventional houses regarding indoor thermal conditions and reported CO2 levels. The findings showed that occupants in LEED-registered houses express higher satisfaction with the indoor environment parameters. Energy performance analysis demonstrates greater efficiency in LEED-registered houses. This research highlights the benefits of adopting green building practices to enhance indoor environmental quality, occupant satisfaction, and energy efficiency in Jordan’s residential buildings. The findings contribute to the knowledge base on sustainable building practices and provide insights for policymakers, designers, and homeowners aiming to improve the performance and comfort of residential buildings in Jordan.
