In the ever-evolving landscape of information security, the automation of ISO 27001 implementation emerges as a compelling avenue to enhance efficiency and efficacy. This paper delves into the nuanced realm of ISO 27001 automation, illuminating the convergence of diverse automation endeavors and their transformative impact. Additionally, the cautionary note sounded by Bellamy et al. (IBM Syst J 46:205–218, 2007) resonates as a reminder that “ultimately one or more persons must take personal and legal responsibility for compliance.” This paper further introduces SimplISO, a tool designed to address the challenges underscored in the research. Furthermore, we conduct a case study on how SimplISO is suited to establish an ISO 27001 compliant ISMS for small and medium-sized enterprises.
