Strategies for Creating Self-avatars: Can Avatars Be a Means of Self-presentation?
摘要
The purpose of this study was to clarify what kind of strategies are used in creating avatars and what kind of personal attributes are related to these strategies. Thirty participants (14 males and 16 females) were asked to create avatars and evaluate them. The results showed that the avatars tended to reflect the self-presented image of the real self and that there were differences in the avatar creation strategy depending on individual attributes. In addition, many participants incorporated the physical features of their real selves in their avatars even though the use of avatars can completely free them from the constraints of their real bodies. Furthermore, there are four major avatar creation strategies, suggesting that avatars may be used as a form of self-expression in addition to their function as alter egos.
