Designing User Interface for Color Association Analysis Tool

In this study, we focus on designing the interface and functionality of color analysis tools to investigate color associations. This approach advances beyond conventional analytical methods, rendering the results of color correlation studies more scientific and robust. This study aimed to (1) develop a color analysis tool for analyzing the relations between semantic color adjectives and the investigation results of color associations, and (2) examine the color association analysis tool to demonstrate the spatial distribution and volumetric presence of colors linked with semantic adjectives in the CIELab color space. In a previous study, the prototype of the analysis tool was designed based on the rules of user interface design and to execute an easy analysis method to understand the color distribution of serial color chips in the CIELab color space. Three experts were invited to discuss and review the functions and analysis procedures of the color analysis tool. The interface of the analysis tool includes importing the raw data with CIELab and the RGB values, and color volume calculation represented in the CIELab color space. Color analysis was performed according to the workflow process for calculating the color image from the RGB value to CIEL*a*b*. In terms of academic research contributions, this study recognizes that effective color analysis and display go beyond simple color swatch tools. It relies on establishing the strength of relationships between color semantics vocabulary and their associated colors within the CIELab color space. Future work could explore the mapping of color semantics to perceived colors in people’s associations and examine its clustering effects.
