In HCI research on immigrants and aging, there’s a focus on social supports, but less on older internal migrants’ adaptability. We aim to identify the resilience sources in older adults and assist them in forging new emotional bonds with their past experiences. Conducted in Beijing, China, our study delves into the social adaptation challenges these individuals face, utilizing metadata surveys and in-depth semi-structured interviews with nine participants. We uncovered a significant resilience rooted in memories among the older internal migrant population. Furthermore, we emphasized the advantages of integrating memories with immersive VR technology and examined the prerequisites for deploying such memory-enhanced VR. Additionally, we introduced a novel VR reminiscence probe concept that bridges the past and present. This initiative seeks to stimulate dialogue on assisting older internal migrants in recalling their past, harnessing positive energy from VR immersive environments, and devising design strategies and methodologies to address the challenges confronting older internal migrants more effectively.
