This paper aims to investigate the search for online information and support for older patients, in France, focusing on a particular type of cancer, Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL), and a specific social media: Facebook. It raises the following question: How can a digital tool like Facebook, whose accompanying discourses a priori exclude its use by so-called “elderly” population groups, constitute a means of exchange around CLL, a cancer that primarily affects the elderly? This question is addressed using a semio-discursive and communicative analysis of three contemporary (2022–2023) French Facebook groups, the publications they offer, and the comments and exchanges they provoke. Through this analysis, the paper shows how Facebook is today a place to discuss, also, serious illness, painful symptoms, and difficult treatments, all in a tone that easily supports seriousness and even pathos.
