A Preliminary Exploration of the Effectiveness of Portable Simulated Pet Systems Based on UI/UX Design in Alleviating Mental Stress Among Caregivers

This study preliminarily explores the effectiveness of a UI/UX design-based portable simulated pet system (KEDAMA application) in alleviating mental stress among caregivers. As countries like Japan enter a super-aged society, caregivers are increasingly burdened physically and mentally, especially due to lumbar pain and psychological stress from transferring elderly individuals. The KEDAMA application aims to offer caregivers a tool for stress relief by providing a customizable virtual pet experience. The system framework includes creation, voice, personal, and more pages, supporting personalized customization of pet appearances and sounds. Preliminary evaluations indicate that interaction with KEDAMA significantly improves caregivers’ performance across six dimensions: emotional, linguistic, visual, behavioral, social interaction, and excitement levels, thereby reducing their mental stress. The study also finds that long-term interaction with KEDAMA positively impacts caregivers’ emotional dimensions without affecting the overall user experience. Thus, KEDAMA has the potential to serve as a long-term use device, offering continuous improvements in mental health for both caregivers and general users.
