In today's rapidly evolving work and educational landscapes, understanding the impact of environmental settings on creativity is becoming increasingly important. As organizations adopt both digital and physical formats (e.g., workshops), identifying how these environments influence creative processes can significantly enhance innovation outcomes. Creativity, a cornerstone of innovation, thrives in diverse settings, each offering unique characteristics and challenges. This study explores the effects of digital and physical environments on human creativity, focusing on two iterations of a data thinking course in a higher education institution, one conducted entirely in person and the other fully digital. Using a methodological approach that included surveys, focus group interviews, observations, and analyses of creative outputs, we assessed the experiences of 28 interdisciplinary students across both iterations. By exploring ideation, collaboration dynamics, and data integration as individual indicators of creativity, we aimed to understand how these environments influence the creative process. Our findings reveal that physical environments can enhance creativity through immediate feedback, dynamic interactions, and spontaneous brainstorming, fostering deeper group cohesion and engagement. Conversely, digital environments offer flexibility, can save time, and avoid media discontinuity. Consequently, this study provides insights for organizations and moderators aiming to plan and design creative processes, underscoring the importance of tailoring approaches to the specific benefits and challenges of physical and digital environments.
