Fiction and Imagined Possibilities for the Formation of Spiritual and Moral Qualities in Technical University Students

In this paper we consider ways of forming the spiritual and moral qualities of technical university students through fiction and imagined possibilities. As part of the research, different definitions of spiritual and moral values are analyzed. A model of spiritual ideals and moral values of a person is presented in the article. The article discusses various methods and technologies that can be used in foreign language classes at a technical university aiming to develop the individual as a personality with spiritual and moral qualities. Different technologies such as cooperation, interaction, joint work, work in teams are all used at English lessons to form morality and spirituality at a technical university (National Research University “Moscow Power Engineering Institute” (NRU “MPEI”)). These are here considered to the extent that they address students through fiction and imagined possibilities. The results of a survey investigating the spiritual and moral values of two NRU “MPEI” students groups are provided in the article. For an academic year (2023–2024) the author actively worked with the experimental group. The students worked in teams, they cooperated with each other and the teacher, they did different cooperative fiction tasks at English classes. The survey shows that this leads to better results regarding students’ moral and spiritual qualities, and their success in learning a foreign language.
