Interactive Scenarios: Online Dialogue Simulators for Communication Skills

The study investigates the use of interactive scenarios and online dialogue simulators in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) courses, focusing on the “Foreign Language in Professional Communication” course. By integrating these simulators, which provide immediate feedback and create authentic learning experiences, the study addresses eLearning challenges like limited speaking practice and motivation. Sixty master’s students participated, divided into an experimental group using simulators and a control group. Data collection included surveys, standardized tests, and interaction logs. Results showed a 19% improvement in listening skills and a 16% improvement in reading skills for the experimental group, with 57% of students reporting a positive experience. These findings align with current eLearning trends such as personalized support, practical skills focus, gamification, AI integration, specific goal setting, and microlearning. The simulators effectively enhance receptive skills and indirectly support productive skills development. Furthermore, the potential to use diverse scenarios allows for a broad range of practical applications, from negotiating in business contexts to resolving conflicts in multicultural environments, thereby enriching students’ critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. The study concludes that online dialogue simulators are valuable for EFL courses, suggesting future research on their long-term impact and AI integration to further personalize learning.
