Fantasy Unfixed: The Temporal Orientation of Teachers ‘Personalities and Their Attitudes Towards the Future

The paper proves that the type of attitude to the future is associated with the temporal orientation of teachers ‘personalities. The theoretical part of the paper includes an overview of the concepts of “future”, “image of the future”, “attitude”, “attitude to the future”, “temporal perspective”, “type of temporality of personality”. Based on empirical analysis, two temporal orientations of teachers ‘personalities are identified and described in respect to the connection or lack thereof of perception of the future with other temporal categories. A new type of temporal orientation of the personality in attitudes to the future is proposed – fantasy unfixed. Its similarities with other types of temporal orientation are shown, such as the resource type, the infantile-fixed and neurotic-fixed types. The specificity of the fantasy unfixed type of orientation is the isolation of the future from the past and present, the predominance of the predictive and design-oriented way of building prospects. For people with this type, the past and the present are not considered as intrinsically valuable for shaping the image of the future. At the same time, the predominance of the resource type of temporality over the infantile-fixed, neurotic-fixed and fantasy-unfixed types is noted. An empirical investigation of the temporal orientation of teachers shows that they tend to have an optimistic view of the future.
