Trademark Registration

National trademark registration systems evolved in the nineteenth century. The U.S. federal system of trademark registration of 1870 was stimulated by both earlier state trademark laws and by international trademark agreements. It pre-empted design patent trademarks but not copyright registration for prints and labels. Examining both the number of registrations over time and the variety of industries involved suggest that brand marketing was increasing during this period.
